ADAM Thompson got Southend United back to winning ways with the only goal of the game against Blackpool on Saturday - and then revealed he had forgotten how to celebrate.

The defender secured the Shrimpers a 1-0 victory at Roots Hall with a firm downward header 14 minutes from time.

And the effort also ended Thompson's four year wait for a goal.

"I hadn't scored for a few years so I didn't really know what to do when the ball went in," said the centre-back.

"My celebration was probably a bit weird because I think I had forgotten what to do.

"But I'm just buzzing to have got the goal because it was a massive result for us after a few draws."

Thompson's previous goal had come for Brentford at MK Dons in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy back in August 2011.

However, his first Shrimpers goal moved Phil Brown's side back up to 10th in the League One table.

And it also came after Thompson had fought his way back from a dislocated shoulder which resulted in a seven month absence from Blues' starting line-up.

"This was my third game back and I'm so happy to be out there again," said the 23-year-old.

"A lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes which people don't see.

"But the harder you work the luckier you get and I'm just really happy to be back in the team and to have got my first goal for Southend."

Thompson, who joined Blues initially on loan in August 2013, also started the move which resulted in him heading home a left wing cross from David Worrall.

But even the centre-back was surprised to find himself so far forward.

"I think I got a bit of a nose bleed going up in to the penalty area and I nearly fell over too," laughed Thompson.

"It was a great ball in from Wozza though so I couldn't really miss but the lads have been winding me up because it seemed to go into the net in slow motion."

"But to get the win in those kind of conditions is testament to the lads.

"It was a great result for us and it keeps us close to the play-offs which is where we want to be."

Thompson's header also ended a run of four league games without a win for the Shrimpers.

However, he would have been happy with just a point against Blackpool in the blustery conditions.

"The fans might not agree with me but 0-0 in that wind wouldn't have been a bad result so to win it is brilliant and we're all on a high," said Thompson.

"It was horrible to play in and the wind was just so hard to judge, especially in the first half.

"I'm guessing people were thinking the game had 0-0 written all over it so it's a good win at the start of a big week for us."
