A SOUTHEND United fan flew 10,207 miles from Australia to watch the Shrimpers in action at Bradford City on Saturday, only for the game to be called off.

Andrew Urry, who grew up in Shoebury and lived in Westcliff before emigrating in 2008, heard about the postponement just as he stepped off the supporters’ coach at Valley Parade 90 minutes before kick-off.

But the 41-year-old was able to see the funny side of the call-off.

And he now hopes to see the Shrimpers in action against Bury at Roots Hall this Friday.

“The postponement wasn’t unexpected if I’m honest because we were following things on Twitter and it wasn’t sounding too good,” said Urry.

“I saw the funny side of it because it’s an awful long way to come for a game that’s postponed but you have to be able to laugh at these things.

“There was certainly a bit of gallows humour on the coach home and that’s the best way to be.

“But there are a few matches going on while I’m over here, including Colchester away on Boxing Day, which I’m looking forward to.

“Hopefully they will go ahead because, although my wife, two kids and I have lots planned for our time here, the Southend games I could get to are certainly high on my list of priorities.”

The club have already promised Urry a signed football and he cannot wait to see the Shrimpers in action again.

“Since moving to Brisbane in 2008 I’ve been a long distance fan, following games on the internet or streaming radio commentary,” said Urry.

“There’s also been the occasional game which has been on television but it will obviously be much better seeing the team live.

“I just hope it stops raining before Friday.”
