SOUTHEND United midfielder Jack Bridge is hoping for his big break this season - having recovered from the one in his ribs.

The highly-rated 20-year-old started Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United at Roots Hall.

And he hopes to have done enough to remain in contention for a starting slot once the League One season gets underway.

“I thought it was a good test against a very strong Newcastle team and I enjoyed it out there too,” said Bridge, a product of the club’s youth system.

“Playing out wide was something bit different for me and defensively I was a little bit concerned about that side of things before the game started.

“But I felt as though I did OK and I didn’t mind playing there at all.

“Hopefully I’ve done enough to stay in contention for the first team now as well because I want this to be a big season for me.”

Bridge – who grew up supporting Southend – featured in Blues’ final two games of the previous campaign.

But his progress at the start of pre-season was initially hindered by a fractured rib which forced him to the sidelines.

“It’s still there and I can still feel it but it’s playable now so I can cope with it fine,” said Bridge.

“It’s not going to stop me playing and I’ll be working as hard as I can during the rest of pre-season for what’s ahead.”

Bridge certainly gave his all against Newcastle and enjoyed lining up opposite Isaac Hayden, his former team-mate in Southend’s youth set up.

“We were in the same team about 10 years ago now so it was nice to see him again,” said Bridge.

“We went on a couple of tours together when we were younger and it’s mad for us to be playing against each other after everything that’s happened.

“He’s been doing really well and I hope he has a good season with Newcastle and that I can have one with Southend too.”

Bridge will now be hoping for another chance to impress against Colchester United in Saturday’s pre-season friendly at Roots Hall.

And boss Phil Brown has been impressed by Bridge’s recent progress.

“Jack was playing for Chelmsford last season but he didn’t look out of place against Newcastle,” said Brown.

“He used the ball well.”
