LILY Mellors was full of smiles after helping C & K Basildon Ladies move up to sixth in the Premier League South standings with a 2-0 win against Swindon Town.

Mellors bagged Basildon’s second goal in the hard fought win at the Frost Financial Stadium.

And she was thrilled to help Steve Tilson’s side secure a second league win in succession.

“I was very pleased with the three points as Swindon are a team we want to beat as they are around us in the middle of the table so getting the win against them was good, “said the 24-year-old who can play on the wing or in attack.

“I was happy to get on the score sheet again too.

“It’s always a nice feeling to score and we needed another goal to put the game to bed so I was pleased to be the person to do that.”

Mellors’ goal came in stoppage time to seal victory for C & K.

But she felt the three points should have been secured long before her late strike.

“We could have been two or three up in the first half but we didn’t take our chances,” said Mellors.

“It was a tough game though as Swindon had a very tall side so we didn’t want to give any silly free kicks away for them to maybe score from.

“We all battled hard until the end and when we got the ball down and played one or two touch passing we pulled them apart.”

But Mellors is now keen to build on the victory and continue what she believes has been a good start to the season.

“The season so far has been good and I’m pleased with the way we have started,” said Mellors.

“We worked hard in pre season knowing that we have a tough season ahead of us but we have all pulled through and we’re getting some good results.

“We were all disappointed that we didn’t get results against Cardiff, Tottenham, West Ham and our cup game against Charlton because as a team we played very well but again we didn’t take our chances to get the wins we wanted.

“But we all want to push as far up the table as possible and finish higher then last season and also keep hold of the county cup we won last year.”

C & K Basildon broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half against Swindon.

Stacy Little collected a throw in out wide and sent a long diagonal ball into the penalty area which Sara Sinclair was able to head the past the goalkeeper.

Moments later, Kayleigh Xidhas and Karissa Rodney combined well on the left flank and Rodney sent in a dangerous cross into the six yard box which the visiting goalkeeper did well to hold under pressure.

In reply and, with just three minutes of normal time remaining, Swindon had a great chance to equalise when the Basildon defence misjudged a long ball through the middle, and the Robins forward was able to get in behind the defence.

But, with Nikkita Runnacles narrowing the angle, she shot wide of the post before Basildon made the most of the let off three minutes into stoppage time when Angela Addison teed up Mellors who moved the ball onto her right foot before shooting powerfully past the visiting goalkeeper.
