CANVEY Island trounced Old Brentwoods 88-7 to stay second in Essex Premier One.

The Islanders scored 14 tries in the convincing victory.

And Canvey spokesman Richard Smith was full of praise for the performance.

“The pleasing thing about Saturday’s game was although at times we were scoring at will, the boys kept their shape and used the ball well,” said Smith.

“It was a good performance and a good result.”

Canvey dominated the game right from the start and opened the scoring when Nick Styles touched down and fly-half Damon Cooper added the extras.

Moments later, full-back Jack Chandler scored the first of his three tries before winger Charlie Downes also touched down.

Chandler scored next before Brentwood hit back with a converted try of their own.

But the Islanders immediately replied with a try from Jason Fardell before Harry Atkins and Kieran Mayo also scored twice in quick succession.

Chandler then completed his hat-trick before Dennis and Tommi Gillinwater also got onto the score-sheet.

With Canvey continuing to pile on the pressure, Atkins then went over before Jason Carter and Brett Smith also added tries to complete the scoring.

Rock-bottom Billericay found themselves on the wrong end of a big scoreline as they lost 83-0 at table-topping Braintree while Stanford le Hope were seen off 39-10 by third placed Clacton.

However, it was a far more successful day for eighth placed Basildon in London Three North East as they beat West Norfolk 44-17.

In London One North, Thurrock triumphed 52-24 at Old Priorians.

The victory ended a run of three successive defeats for Thurrock and kept them sixth in the table.
