WICKFORD Cricket Club played host to Essex 2nd XI's Trophy match against Nottinghamshire.

The club's Patmore Memorial Ground was bathed in sunshine for much of the day's play.

Star turn of the day was provided by the visitors, who included their 1st XI captain, New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming, in their ranks.

Nottinghamshire won the toss and inserted their hosts, who scored 213-7 from their 50 overs.

Darren Thomas top-scored with 61 not out from just 55 balls, while Tony Palladino added 45, Zoheb Sharif 38 and Tom Huggins 26.

In reply, Fleming led the way, scoring a majestic 107 to lead Nottinghamshire to a 5-wicket victory in the penultimate over.

He was caught on the boundary off Jahid Ahmed.

Wickford CC spokesman Tim Campbell said the day had been a hugely successful one for the Shepherd Neame Essex League club.

"It's been a real honour for the club to host the match," he said.

"And to have someone of Stephen Fleming's standing playing here was a bonus.

"All the members, their families and visitors had a thoroughly enjoyable day and the amount of runs scored suggests we produced a wicket that was suitable for cricket at the highest level."
