SOUTHEND United have confirmed a supporter passed away during this afternoon's 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers at Roots Hall.

John Stoten was given medical attention in the West Stand during the first half of the League One fixture.

But a club statement has now confirmed the fan passed away in hospital.

"Southend United Football Club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of supporter John Stoten during today’s fixture against Blackburn Rovers," said the statement.

"The emergency services did all they could to save John but unfortunately, he passed away at hospital shortly afterwards.

"The management, players, directors and staff of Southend United would like to send their sincere condolences to friends and family of John at this difficult time.

"In collaboration with John’s family, the club will hold a minute’s silence to remember him before an upcoming home fixture.

"We would also like to thank the support of fellow Blues fans who assisted the medical services."

Goals from Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly secured all three points for the Shrimpers.

And Blues boss Phil Brown dedicated the win to John.

“We had an 83 year old pass away in the stands and I would like to dedicate the three points to him and his family," said Brown.

"We were told six minutes into the game that a fan was receiving CPR and the game was going to be stopped which we agreed to but that didn't happen.

"Unfortunately he passed away and I told the players at half-time.

"But John supported us for nearly 80 years and the least we can do is dedicate the win to him.”
