FORMER Southend United manager Steve Tilson helped fire England’s over 50 team to Four Nation glory.

Defending champions England won all three of their matches with Tilson scoring in victories against Wales and Ireland.

And Tilson was pleased to secure more success with the national team.

“It’s great to have played for the England team again and to have won every game too,” said Tilson.

“It’s tough playing three days in three games but I think we had that bit of firepower you need.

“We scored eight goals in the three games and to defend the title was brilliant.

“It’s a really well run event and everyone there really enjoyed it.

“Next year it’s in Scotland and it would be great to go there and make it three in a row.”

England kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win against Wales with Tilson among the goalscorers with a fine free-kick.

A 4-1 win victory against Scotland followed before England saw off Ireland 2-1 in their final game.

Tilson - who plays his club football for Herongate Veterans - bagged a penalty in the win.

And manager Steve Adkins, who is also based in Essex, was happy with his team’s displays.

“Last year we won two of our three games and to go and win all three this year was great,” said Adkins.

“We had a strong squad with players from all over the country but I would say at least half of the squad were from the Essex/London area.

“The team spirit was great and even though all of the games were very competitive on the pitch everyone got on really well off it and went out for a drink when the games were over.

“It was held at Manchester City’s former training ground and I think we surprised a few people.

“When we turned up I think everyone thought we had arrived for the walking football sessions but the games were all of a good standard and would have been enjoyable to watch.”

And Adkins is now hoping Gareth Southgate will able to follow in his footsteps by also securing success for England at the World Cup.

“Maybe I should give Gareth a call,” laughed Adkins.

“We did play three at the back like him but it would be great if England could have a good World Cup and we will all be cheering them on.”
