FIT-AGAIN defender Simon Francis is determined to force his way back into the Southend United first team.

The 22-year-old missed the start of the campaign with an ankle injury he picked up during a pre-season friendly at Canvey Island four weeks ago.

But, having successfully played 90 minutes for the reserves yesterday in their 2-1 win over MK Dons, the former Sheffield United full-back is now hoping to give manager Steve Tilson a selection headache.

"I'm feeling no pain at all with my ankle now," said Francis.

"I'm working in the gym before training to strengthen it up and there was never going to be a problem with my actual fitness because I did most of pre-season and I'm feeling fine.

"It's just a case of trying to make sure I don't suffer another injury there but hopefully I can soon be back in the first team."

However, Francis faces a fight to figure for the first team as Tilson decided to bolster his squad during the right back's absence - bringing in Kerrea Gilbert on loan from Arsenal for six months.

That annoyed Francis but he is still hopeful of regaining his place.

"I'm not going to lie, I was disappointed when the gaffer brought in Kerrea," he said.

"I knew I was only going to miss about two weeks of the season but after the start we've had I don't think anyone's place in the team is safe so it's up to me to work hard and get in the team."

Francis played centre back for the Shrimpers second string yesterday as Dean Austin started his spell in charge with a victory.

Blues, who fielded former Watford winger Albert Jarrett in their side, came from behind to get the win after Mustapha Carayol had given Dons the lead.

Gary Hooper headed home an equaliser on the hour mark before young midfielder Jamie Forshaw superbly netted what proved to be the winning goal from long range.
