SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell insists tomorrow’s starting line-up at Leyton Orient will not necessarily be the team which kicks off the League One season.

The Shrimpers head to Brisbane Road for their final pre-season fixture of the summer this weekend.

But Powell does not feel too much should be read into who he selects to face the O’s.

“People will always look at it and think that’s the team for next week but I look at it differently,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“I’ll be looking at things I want to see displayed not only in this game but for the forthcoming campaign.

“I have an idea but we still have a clear week and next week is all geared for us playing against Doncaster.

“We’re still working our way towards full fitness but the players did terrifically well against Leeds especially in the hot conditions and we’ll be looking to build on that now against Orient.”

The O’s are among the favourites to win promotion from the National League this season.

And Powell is looking forward to the contest.

“Orient will be a good test for us and it’s more like what we will face throughout the season in League One,” said the 48-year-old.

“After playing Orient, we have a clear week ahead of the Doncaster game and that’s what I wanted.

“I didn’t want a game in the final few days before the season starts.

“Instead we’ll home in on what we’re all about and what we want to see throughout the League One season.”
