MARK Oxley has been named as Southend United's new captain.

Blues boss Chris Powell shared the armband around the team during pre-season.

But Powell has decided to select Oxley as skipper, much to the delight of the goalkeeper.

“When the manager told me I was delighted,” said Oxley.

“There have been some good captains at the club over the years, some that I have played with, but it isn’t going to change anything with me.

“My job doesn’t change because talking and being vocal has always been a strength of mine and that wouldn’t have changed if I wasn’t the captain.

“It’s part and parcel of my job to be vocal but it will be great honour to lead the team.

"I’m delighted and I’ll continue to try and do as well as I can for my team with my performances."

And Powell is certain Oxley - who was named Blues' player of the year last season - will impress in the role.

“Mark has been a real leader on and off the pitch since I’ve been here," said Powell.

“He signed a new deal in the summer, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the division and he has the right character and personality to lead the team.”
