SHAWN McCoulsky is eager to build on his goalscoring Southend United debut by firing the Shrimpers to their first win of the season this weekend.

McCoulsky - who is on loan from Bristol City - netted in his first Blues outing against Brentford on Tuesday night.

And the 21-year-old is now seeking more of the same against Bradford City on Saturday, along with the three points.

“It’s still early but we haven’t won yet and it would be great to get the win on Saturday to set us off,” said McCoulsky.

“Who knows where we could go after that but I want to help the team finish as high up the table as we can by scoring as many goals as I can.

“I want to show everyone what I’ve got and it was a relief to get off the mark against Brentford.

“It was a nice way to score but it’s the result which counts.

“The boys are disappointed but we’re looking forward to Saturday now.”

The Shrimpers were beaten 4-2 by Brentford in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

And McCoulsky was impressed by how the Bees went about their business.

“Brentford were a very good side,” said the striker.

“They played some very good football but we competed well against them.

“On the day we just didn’t take enough of our chances and they did to punish us.”

However, McCoulsky was able to convert one of the opportunities which came his way and could also attempt to claim Blues’ first goal after he headed home a goalbound effort from Theo Robinson.

“I thought I headed it before it went over the line,” said McCoulsky.

“But if it’s Theo’s goal then congratulations to him.

“I was pleased to get one and it does lift a little bit of pressure off you.

“Hopefully the goals will come naturally now and so will the results.”

And McCoulsky’s debut was also praised by Blues boss Chris Powell.

“It was excellent and very impressive,” said Powell.

“Shawn had a willingness to compete, he has a good spring and he wants to get in behind.

“For someone who has been with us a day or two he did ever so well.”
