THE end of the season can't come quickly enough for Iain O'Connell's understrength side.

Safe from relegation fears for some time now, this latest defeat at the hands of play-off chasing Ware was their sixth on the trot.

They gave a decent account of themselves in this latest encounter, but were always second best against opposition with something to play for.

In a scrappy opening half the hosts took a 27th minute lead in front of a 194-strong crowd when the excellent Joe Stevens crossed from the left and Danny Spendlove scored.

Visiting goalkeeper Louis Green made an excellent save from Steven's free-kick just before the break, but had no chance when the same player made it 2-0 after 50 minutes, bending his set piece home into the bottom corner.

To give Wakering credit they refused to lay down and die and top scorer Martin Tuohy, back from a four-match ban, headed home a corner to reduce the deficit two minutes later.

But any thoughts that the visitors might gain some reward were ended after 79 minutes when John Frendo brought down a left-wing cross and fired past Green into the far corner.

Rovers might have put further pressure on Ware, but striker Anton Dwyer shot straight at home keeper Ryan Jones when well-placed.

And Ryan Redford wasted two good chances of extending the home side's advantage before the final whistle sounded to leave fourth-placed Ware looking well-set for a play-off spot.

Wakering play their final home game of the season next Saturday against an Arlesey Town side above them and will look to at least give their fans a good send-off on a day when their player of the season trophy is traditionally awarded.
