POPULAR skipper Jamie Dormer has been voted the club's player of the year by Billericay Town fans.

Long-serving Dormer, who has made 219 full appearances for the club but has been out for the past seven matches due to injury, played a leading part in the New Lodge side's magnificent FA Cup run.

This saw them take on Football League opposition for the first time ever competitively when they lost to League One leaders Swansea City in the first round.

Former Southend United full-back Dave McSweeney, who made his 200th Billericay appearance last week, took the players' player prize.

Top scorer Bradley Woods-Garness was voted top young player with his 22-goal tally also bringing him the golden boot award.

Midfielder Leon Hunter's screaming effort in the 2-2 home draw with AFC Wimbledon was voted goal of the season and the Len Dewson award went to Alec Zimbler.

The awards were made at New Lodge on Saturday night following Town's penultimate home match of the season.

Billericay, still in with a chance of making the play-offs mathematically but realistically out of the race, produced a fine comeback from 2-0 down to earn a point.

The Kent visitors are still very much in the promotion mix - but won few new admirers among those who watched their petulant antics in front of a 536 crowd.

Tonbridge certainly have plenty of footballing ability, but what they'll be remembered for here was a pathetic performance of constantly trying to con match officials by dramatically diving when challenged and arguing over just about every decision.

To that end they were egged on in their attempts to harass referee Frank Meilack and his two assistants by a bench that took every opportunity to give the match officials a hard time.

Their constant whinging became increasingly tiresome as the afternoon wore on and my main thought afterwards was that it's no surprise just how difficult it's becoming to persuade people to take up refereeing.

What sane person would volunteer to have to put up with the kind of treatment Mr Meilack and his assistants were subjected to by these Angels With Dirty Faces?

On the footballing front, Tonbridge took an 11th-minute lead when Steve Heffer clearly fouled Akwasi Edusei in the box and Carl Rook fired home the penalty.

When Tommy Tyne cracked home the Angels second on 22 minutes it looked like game over - and might well have been if Tonbridge had concentrated on playing football instead of niggling their way through the rest of the action.

But Billericay are certainly not lacking in spirit and, as they had done from a similar position against Carshalton three weeks earlier, launched a great recovery.

It saw Lee Hodges collect a ball over the top to reduce the deficit after 58 minutes and Woods Garness equalise with a well-struck effort four minutes later.

Sadly, despite Rikki Burbridge and substitute Tommy Tejan-Sie going close, Billericay couldn't grab a winner.

So Tonbridge left with a point which ultimately could help see them in a play-off position However, they continued their tiresome confrontation tactics with the match officials on the pitch at the end and to be honest left a sour taste in the mouths of those who, perhaps wrongly, still see a game of football as sport!.

If this is the way the majority - but not all - of their players and management team feel the game should be approached, all I can say is roll on the cricket season!
