CANVEY Island were the victors in Saturday's derby with Billericay as they came out on top 23-10.

The win put the Islanders above their rivals and up into seventh in the standings.

Basildon put up a brave showing at second placed Sudbury before narrowly being edged out 16-15 but there was no stopping South Woodham Ferrers as they beat Upminster 17-10 at home.

>Westcliff's third team took the BL Office Centre Division Four Plate on Saturday, defying torrential rain and the attentions of a determined Maldon second string.

For the second year running Westcliff hosted all 16 BL Cup and Plate finals with lower teams from clubs all over Essex and East London taking part.

Both Westcliff and Maldon were keen to attack, but it was Westcliff who soon showed the edge and a Dan King try put them 5-0 to the good.

Excellent running by Mike Pitt put Sam Reynolds in for a try, but Maldon pegged them back with a try of their own.

Sam Reynolds sprinted in for his second try and a 15-5 lead, and then the rain went up two or three gears as well from heavy to torrential, but it didn't stop Sam Reynolds from scoring another try to make it 20-5.

The game slowed down in the mud, but Westcliff forced a scrum near the Maldon line and a big effort saw them push the visitors back and Martin Wylie score from a number eight pick-up to make it 25-5.

Defying the conditions, Westcliff put together some great rugby, and Dan King got the sixth try and then Mike Pitt the seventh, after a defence splitting run.

Maldon had a purple patch towards the end, but Westcliff's defence held out.

Other local results meant that Southend's third team took the Division One cup, Billericay took the Division Four cup, Southend's fourth team the Division Six cup, Canvey's third team the Division Seven cup and Runwell's second team the Division Eight cup.
