WEST Leigh Infant School has been crowned Southend Key Stage One School Sport School of the Year for the second year in a row.

The award was made by the Southend Primary School Sports Partnership which is made up of all primary schools in Southend and the surrounding areas.

This year, West Leigh have won the KS1 Borough Sports, KS1 Cross Country, KS1 Dodgeball, KS1 Football, KS1 Girls Football, KS1 Tag Rugby, KS1 Quad Kids Athletics

Most recently, West Leigh represented Southend in the KS1 Essex Cricket finals, at Colchester Cricket Club, and finished first in the whole of Essex.

A spokesperson for the school said: "We feel these are all amazing achievements considering our school's lack of space.

"We have a tiny playground and no field.

"We were also received the award because of our commitment in offering opportunities to get involved in sport and physical activity to as many children as possible.

"That meant 109 out of 120 children in Year 2 represented the school in some capacity at a sporting event this year."

And the school have also taken part in less competitive events.

"As well as competitions we have taken part in lots of participation events where there is no competitive element and the emphasis is on enjoyment and participation," added the spokesperson.

"This includes a dance festival, speed stacking, mini games, various football friendlies, panathlon multi sports, panathlon swimming and panathlon bowling.

"We feel this award and our sporting success this year is a reflection of our hard work as a school to improve the children’s fitness and also a reflection of our passion and dedication to get children enthusiastic about sport, providing them with opportunities to take part."
