SOUTHEND United surged to a 2-0 win at Woking this afternoon.

Headers from Harry Cardwell and Gus Scott-Morriss made sure of well-deserved three points for the Shrimpers.

And the win was also enough to also see Kevin Maher’s side work their way out of the relegation zone.

Blues were deducted 10 points earlier on this season due to financial irregularities.

But Justin Rees and his consortium agreed terms to save the club last week and the Shrimpers added to the new found feel-good factor by securing a second successive win this afternoon.

Blues handed on loan Ipswich Town goalkeeper Nick Hayes his debut between the sticks and the visitors opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the match, with top scorer Cardwell on target for the 11th time this season.

A well-worked following a throw on the right flank saw the ball worked back into the path of Scott-Morriss whose fine cross found Cardwell who sent a well taken header into the bottom left hand corner of the net from 12 yards.

Moments later, a looping Scott-Morriss header, following a left wing cross from Jason Demetriou, was tipped over the crossbar by Woking goalkeeper Will Jaaskelainen.

Woking made a double change at the break in a bid to pose more of their own problems with Reece Grego-Cox and Morgan Williams both entering the action.

The hosts immediately threatened when Hayes rushed out of his area to try and deal with a long ball forward, only for Demetriou to divert the ball wide of the debutant keeper.

However, Dennon Lewis could not capitalise on the confusion as he blasted over the crossbar from the right flank.

After surviving the scare, Blues fought back and doubled their lead following a well-worked corner in the 55th minute.

Oli Coker’s driven delivery from the right hand side found the head of Cardwell who nodded the ball back across goal, enabling Scott-Morriss to head home from close range.

The Shrimpers immediately made their first change of the game with Daniel Kanu coming on for his debut as the Charlton loanee replaced Jack Wood in attack.

Kanu was soon involved as his left wing cross found Cardwell whose shot smacked against the face of Jaaskelainen before Bridge saw his follow up effort deflected wide of the left post.

Blues made their second alteration of the match in the 80th minute with Mauro Vilhete replacing Jack Bridge before the hosts wasted a golden chance to get back into the game with Williams firing wide of the left post from 12 yards.

Dan Moss then saw a long range shot tipped wide of the target by Hayes as the visitors saw out the closing stages to secure a clean sheet as well as all three points.
