SOUTHEND United ran riot at Roots Hall this afternoon with Daniel Kanu scoring four goals in a stunning 5-0 victory against Solihull Moors.

The on loan Charlton Athletic forward produced an eye catching performance in attack.

And he was joined on the score-sheet by Noor Husin as Blues bagged a big win in front of the watching Justin Rees.

The Australian – who is leading a consortium close to taking control of the club – was at his first ever match at Roots Hall.

But there would have been concern early on as Jason Demetriou limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in just the 11th minute and was replaced in the back three by Brooklyn Kabongolo.

Four minutes after the alteration, the Shrimpers took the lead when a deep right wing cross from Harry Taylor was headed back across goal by Ollie Kensdale, enabling Kanu to volley home from close range.

Moments later, Kabongolo headed a right-wing cross from Fonguck wide of the left post before Harry Cardwell fired over from just inside the penalty area after neat approach play from Kanu.

Oli Coker then curled a 25 yard free-kick inches over the crossbar before Blues survived a slight scare when a back-pass from Kabongolo appeared to wrong-foot Nick Hayes before the keeper scrambled back to clear.

However, the Shrimpers soon hit back and doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Kanu latched onto a poor pass from Solihull goalkeeper Tommy Simkin before sending a first time left footed shot high into the top right hand corner of the net.

After the break, Jack Bridge’s left wing cross was headed wide of the right post by the hat-trick hunting Kanu before Kabongolo saw a header from Bridge’s right wing corner impressively kept out by Simkin.

The visiting custodian then did well to keep out another Kabongolo header before the Shrimpers ran riot with three goals in quick succession.

The impressive Noor Husin made it 3-0 in the 61st minute after teeing himself on the edge of the penalty area and scoring with a brilliant left footed volley.

Three minutes later, Blues made it 4-0 as an inviting left wing cross from Bridge was headed home by Kanu for his hat-trick.

But the youngster was not finished there and, with 66 minutes on the clock, he netted his fourth goal of the game with another clinical close range finish.

The Shrimpers made a second change in the 71st minute with Mauro Vilhete replacing a tiring Husin before Jack Wood replaced Cardwell who was forced off injured.

Solihull soon made a change of their own with ex Shrimper Jon Benton coming on for his Moors debut before the hosts easily saw out the closing stages with Fonguck and Kabongolo both having long range efforts saved.
