THERE is no disguising Ollie Kendale’s determination to return for Southend United this weekend - even if a mask is needed to help make it happen.

The Shrimpers centre-back has missed the last five matches after suffering serious facial injuries during the 4-1 win against Aldershot Town in February.

But, after playing 90 minutes in a behind closed doors clash with Leyton Orient on Tuesday, Kensdale says he is available for Saturday’s match with Woking if required.

“Tuesday did me the world of good in terms of match sharpness but I haven’t lost too much and you can get away with it in the position I am,” said Kensdale.

“I’m back in contention and hopefully I’m picked on Saturday but if not I’ll be cheering on the boys.”

Kensdale had previously started every game for the Shrimpers this season prior to the injury.

And he found being forced onto the sidelines tough to take.

“I’m the worst person when I’m injured and feel like banging my head against a brick wall,” said Kensdale.

“To be involved in a game again was really good.

“The mask felt good too and it’s all really positive.”

Kensdale had his protective mask fitted to perfectly fit the shape of his face.

And he followed in the foot-steps of England captain Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min with the specialist he went to see.

“The club have been really good with me,” said the 23-year-old.

“I went to see a really good specialist and got my mask fitted so I couldn’t wish for anything better.

“He’s done Son’s mask this season and Harry Kane’s before too so I knew I was in good hands.

“You do notice it’s there but it’s comfortable and not a problem at all.”

Kensdale will have to wear the mask for the foreseeable future and could yet need surgery.

But he is pleased to be making progress

“It was a complicated injury but I’m glad I’m on the mend now,” said Kensdale.

"I burst and fractured optical floor in my eye socket but not the cheekbone below it.

"I broke my nose as well and they would have to break the cheekbone if I was to have surgery which I still might have to.

"But it was just the force of Dackers' elbow which caused it."
