BILLERICAY Town manager Gary McCann understands the challenge facing his side after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Wingate & Finchley.

Town got off to a flyer as Bradley Stevenson broke the deadlock on 10 minutes and despite being in control throughout, Wingate won it at the death thanks to goals from Zack Newton and Joseph Boachie in the fifth and ninth minute of additional time respectively.

Speaking to the club's YouTube channel, McCann knows his squad are in a bad place at the moment.

“There is no question that we have lost the capability to win games of football at the moment,” he admitted.

“We found a way to get beat today and that is the disappointing factor in today’s outcome because I thought we put so much into the game.

“For large parts, the performance was exactly what was required and I thought tactically we were good.

“They have ended up needing to change shape a couple of times to try and create something.

“The ability to see games out and win games of football, we seem to be short of that at the moment.

“We are on a terrible run of form: the players are on the floor and every week we are finding ourselves trying to pick them up and get them where they need to be.

“I do believe the last three performances have been much more like us.

“I thought against Hastings (United) we were well worthy of a point, I thought last week the score line really flattered the opposition (against Hornchurch).

“Anyone at the game today would see that there was only one team that deserved to win it but there is a winner and credit to Wingate.

“We have got a mental fragility in the team and it is really disappointing.”

Billericay will be looking to secure their first win in eight league matches with a trip to Dulwich Hamlet, a side looking to gate-crash the play-offs and currently sit in seventh place.

McCann views it as a good opportunity to try and return to the winning trail.

“It doesn’t feel like too much is going for us at the moment but there is no time to feel sorry for ourselves," he said.

“We have been doing everything in our power to halt the slide and get the players where they need to be and next week is a great game for them.

“I wanted to go into next weekend’s game on the back of a win and a performance but we didn’t get it.

“It’s another week of soul-searching and getting the chaps up for an opponent we know we have a bit of history with.

“We put on one of our better performances of the season against them earlier on this season and I am sure they will be ready and waiting for us because they have been climbing the table and getting themselves closer to the play-offs.”

Billericay are now eighth in the Isthmian Premier Division.
