SOUTHEND United midfielder Cav Miley could start to “hit and hope” more often after his match-winning strike at Wealdstone.

Miley’s first goal of the season secured the Shrimpers a 2-1 victory at Grosvenor Vale.

And the 28-year-old believes he should be hitting the back of the net more regularly.

“I don't do it enough,” confessed Miley.

“I probably don't shoot enough and have enough goal contributions.

“It was a bit of luck really, you hit it and hope and it's gone in.

“But I'm over the moon to finally get a goal this season and to get the win.

“It was a great result away from home against a team who are fighting too.

“We stood up to it again and it's a really good win on the road.”

Blues fought back from a goal down to pick up all three points against a Wealdstone side who sit just above the drop zone.

And Miley feels the Shrimpers are now well equipped at winning when not always at their best.

“It's tough coming here but we're unbeaten in 14 games and we haven’t always performed in that run,” said Miley.

“We've ground out results and that's probably something we didn't do enough last season.

“It shows the character of the team and we worked hard to win this one too.”

The victory pushed Blues up to ninth in the National League table.

And Miley is pleased to see the momentum being gathered.

“Everyone is trying to push the club in the right direction and we've got a lot of character too,” said Miley.

“The fans have travelled in numbers as well and it pushes us all the way.

“It's unbelievable and you especially see it away from home.

“You come to different grounds and they just take over.

“We need that support and we've had it since the minute I've come here.

“Hopefully that carries on and we keep on pushing in the right direction.”

Blues head to AFC Fylde on Saturday before finishing the season at home to Rochdale seven days later.

And Miley is keen to pick up maximum points as the Shrimpers are still mathematically in with a chance of making the play-offs.

“There are loads of games on and off in this league but we just concentrate on us and the games we have left,” said Miley.

“I know it's a bit cliched but it's true.

“We'll do everything we can to win the last two games and see what happens.”

However, the Blues have now recorded back to back wins.

And the victory at Wealdstone was secured after Miley took on board advice given out at half-time.

“The gaffer was saying to us midfielders that when we drive forward with it that it seems to be opening up,” said Miley.

“I was a bit higher up than I normally would be so I thought let’s see where this goes.

“Luckily it went in but if you ask the lads normally they go everywhere in training so you could see by the celebrations the lads found it quite amusing.”

Miley’s goal ultimately proved to be the winner but only after a stunning double save from Collin Andeng Ndi at the death.

And Miley believes the Shrimpers shot-stopper deserves more recognition for his performances.

“I don't think he gets enough credit because he's been unbelievable,” said Miley.

“For his age and during times at the club when it's not been great he's always performed.

“He’s been unbelievable.”
