Ryman Division One North: Tilbury went through another disappointing evening at Chadfields – losing 3-0 to WIngate and Finchley – and suffered the embarrassment of seeing one of their own players storm off the pitch claiming racial abuse from his own supporters against the referee.
The incident happened soon after Wingate had taken the lead through Leon Fisher on 21 minutes.
Tilbury, who has earlier seen striker Chris Stowe force two fine saves from visiting goalkeeper Gavin King attacked again and Stowe was through on goal, but appeared to be flattened by one of Wingate's defenders, Marvin Samuel, who is black .
Referee David Bushell waved away Tilbury's protests and received abuse from the terraces.
That incensed Stephenson, himself black, who immediately walked off the pitch and soon after left the ground.
Leon Nelson (61) and Chris Chase (68) sealed the victory.
