DISABLED Westcliff swimmer Jo-Jo Cranfield continues to make a big splash.

Her latest success came in the Welsh national Long Course Championships in Swansea where she won three bronze medals and also took fifth, sixth and seventh placings.

Her third spots were in the 400 freestyle (5 mins. 24.62 secs), 200 freestyle 2.38.06) and 100 backstroke (1.31.01).

Jo-Jo was fifth in the 50 freestyle (33.64), sixth in the 100 freestyle (1.14.67) and seventh in the 200 IM (3.01.54).

There has been major interest in the Rochford Swimming Club swimmer’s future following last week’s story that she had been offered a scholarship to attend Britain’s top sporting school, Millfield in Somerset, from September.

But, although she will receive a scholarship, Jo-Jo and her parents will still have to make a large contribution to her fees. For that reason the family are looking for sponsorship.

The 100 Club at Belfairs College, where Jo-Jo is a student, already contribute £60 per month towards her expenses.

It is the second year they have done this, but they will not be able to continue after she leaves the school next summer.

But Belfairs’ community projects co-ordinator Jan Andrews has made a two-minute video with the swimmer and headteacher John Duprey where her aims and aspirations are revealed along with a need for cash backing.

This can be viewed on the Echo’s own website: www.echo-news.co.uk Also, the newly-established Tri’n’Swim Well company, whose premises are at Unit One, Roche Close, Rochford, have offered the swimmer and her coach Doug Drake free swimming time in their endless pool at the premises.

The company is run by Gill Kelly and Dawn Rolph and the latter said that Jo-Jo and Drake would be able to work together in private at a sociable and convenient time.

The pool is regarded as excellent training not only for competitive pool swimmers, but also those planning to compete in open water.

It can be hired for just £15 per hour and features over and underwater cameras for stroke analysis with a personal DVD to take home at a cost of £25 per hour.

There are tailor-made packages for triathlon and swimming clubs to attend with their own coaches.

And they claim to be the only retailer in the south to offer “try before you buy” wetsuit and swim skin fitting service.

They stock the complete Blue Seventy range of wetsuits, the Point Zero 3, the Nero 10K and Pool Comp swimskins plus swim socks, caps, gloves and goggles.

Said Rolph: “We are a new business which has only been trading for four weeks so regrettably we are unable to provide direct financial assistance.

“However, we’d love to help Jo-Jo in any other way we can.”

Jo-Jo and coach Drake plus other Rochford Club swimmers will be visiting the facilities next Monday morning.

Said Jo-Jo’s mum Tina: “We’re delighted with any offers of help as it would be such a shame if we were forced to turn down the Millfield opportunity due to lack of cash.

“We’re determined to do our utmost to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

The Tri’n’Swim Well owners are hopeful that open sea swimmers will use their facilities to prepare for next summer’s Great Pier Swim in July.
