SOUTHEND United are sweating on the fitness of striker Francis Laurent ahead of tonight’s clash with Millwall at Roots Hall.

The Frenchman missed the Shrimpers 2-1 triumph at Peterborough United on Saturday with a hamstring strain But with Lee Barnard, Dougie Freedman, Damian Scannell, Alex Revell and James Walker all definitely out Blues are severely lacking options in attack.

And manager Steve Tilson is therefore keeping his fingers crossed that Laurent will recover in time to face the Lions.

“It’s unbelievable how our forward players just keep on getting injured and it certainly isn’t ideal either,” said the Blues boss.

“Barney came in and did well on Saturday but he’s now suspended which is a real disappointment for him and us but we will have to battle on with what we’ve got.”

If Laurent fails to recover then either Simon Francis or Kevin Betsy will line up alongside Theo Robinson as Tilson has been unable to bring in another forward on loan.

The Shrimpers chief had hoped to sign a forward who is currently out of favour at a Championship club.

But he has now opted against a switch to Roots Hall.

“He’s settled in his area and has turned down loan moves to a number of clubs, including ourselves,” confirmed the 42-year-old.

“It’s not ideal but we are looking around again now and hopefully something else will come up.

“We’ve been doing well though, winning five of our last six games, and we want that to continue.

“You have to make the most of it while you can, becauseit doesn’t last forever and things can change very quickly in this game.”

Fifth placed Millwall will be wanting to end Southend’s recent revival to keep alive their push for promotion.

And Tilson is expecting a strong reaction from the Lions after they lost 3-2 at home to Oldham Athletic at the weekend.

“They will be looking to bounce back and I’m sure they are going to be fired up for the game,” he said.

“Kenny Jackett has done a brilliant job there with them and they are having a very good season.

“It’s going to be a real test for us but we are feeling good and can’t wait for the games to come around at the moment.”
