THE company at Shoeburyness and Thorpe Bay Baptist Church, the ninth South East Essex, were in fine form at the national badminton competition run by the Boys Brigade.

The team comprising of Richard Churton, Matthew Payne, Tom Sibthorpe, Edan Cohen and Jonathan Morell beat opponents from Clacton-on-Sea, Nottingham and Warrington to reach the national finals.

Once there they played six doubles games of best of three sets matches against eventual winners Polmont from Scotland and the runners-up Mountjoy from Northern Ireland.

The final round saw the team drawn against the other English team who were from Crowborough in Sussex, who they beat to claim the top spot in England and Wales.

Ninth company finished fifth overall.
