FOOTBALL fans got their hands on the silverware at Lakeside on Sunday when the League Cup went on display at the shopping centre.

Supporters were able to see the famous trophy and watch the 50 greatest moments from the League Cup’s history as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the competition.

Among those who got to hold the cup — currently known as the Carling Cup due to the brewing firm’s sponsorship of the competition — were nine-year-old Taylor Bush and his dad Michael from Benfleet.

The League Cup is currently on tour around the country as part of the Fifty event marking the anniversary of the event’s foundation.

The competition started in the 1960/61 season with ties — and the final — played over two legs, with Aston Villa winning the first final.

By the time QPR won the first final held at Wembley Stadium in 1967, the League Cup final was played as a single match.
