ADAM Barrett insists nobody is still hurting more than him following Monday night’s 2-0 defeat at Colchester United.

The Shrimpers skipper played an embarrassing part in the U’s opening goal as he kicked the ground while trying to clear Anthony Wordsworth’s tame shot off the goal-line.

And the committed centre-back remains devastated by his error.

“I hold my hands up to a mistake and I know I should have cleared it,” said Barrett, 30.

“Nobody is more annoyed or hurt than me at what happened and us losing the game and I still haven’t been able to bring myself to watch any replays of the match.

“The pitch certainly didn’t help and it’s the worst I’ve ever played on in professional game, but I’m not using that as an excuse for my mistake because I still should have stopped it going in.”

Wordsworth went on to score a second goal for Colchester after the break to secure victory for the hosts in the Essex derby.

But despite the defeat, Barrett was again encouraged by the way his side performed in testing circumstances and conditions.

“I thought we were the better team and there were some positive signs from us,” said the defender.

“We showed good spirit but we have to start putting away some of the chances we’re creating.

“I’m still not too sure why my goal was disallowed as even the player who was marking me, Clive Platt, told me it wasn’t a foul.

“But the decision pretty much summed up mine and the team’s evening unfortunately.”
