SOUTHEND United look set to head into tomorrow’s crucial clash with Tranmere Rovers without being paid.

Various sources from inside and outside of the club have told the Echo that the Shrimpers players, who were due to pick up their wages a fortnight ago, have yet to receive their money.

But a club spokesman last night continued to insist it was not true.

“It’s all just rumour and speculation,” said the spokesman.

“It’s all getting a little tiresome but that’s what seems to happen in football.”

Other sources claim otherwise however and say that the players have been paid on time just once this season.

They did not wish to be named in public but revealed the ongoing financial problems were starting to affect the players, especially in training.

“You can really see how it’s getting to people,” said the source.

“We’re all still really in this together and we will fight all the way on the pitch in the matches but when you’re not getting paid and don’t know when you will it’s hard.

“It has certainly affected players in training and it’s also making things hard for the manager because not many people are keen to sign for us now.”
