MIDWEEK guest day produced some solid scoring and a very close result with the winning duo getting home thanks to a better back nine.

Dominic Short and Peter Thomson, from Diss Golf Club, chalked up 43 points with a very consistent 22 on the way out and 21 back to pip Paul Kirkland and Barry Simpson from Lords, Rayleigh on countback.

The latter pair were left regretting a “blob” on the par three 11th which cost them dear.

Third place a point further back were club vice-captain Barry Finch and Dave Kirk of Ballards Gore.

The afternoon nine-hole Texas Scramble saw some sparkling golf played by the team of Roger Davies and John Risley (Orsett) and Kirkland and Simpson who had an eagle, five birdies and two pars for 26.6.

Nearest the pin on the 11th went to Davies while Kirkland had the longest drive and David Coakley was closest to the line on the third.

Meanwhile, four birdies and 11 pars helped two handicapper Steve Weidner claim victory in Rochford's weekly Stableford competition to help qualify for the Scott Spencer trophy.

He notched 40 points to just ease out four players on 39 - Malcolm Cade pipping Roy Abbott, Trevor Daughtey and Liam Gray for second place on countback.

Cade had his handicap cut by one to 14 after a birdie and seven pars while third placed Abbott enjoyed a birdie plus six pars.

Former captain Sue Proctor won Rochford Ladies Spring meeting honours with 38 Stableford points — three more than five on 35.

Joyce Copleston was runner-up on countback with Michelle Elliott-Britto third.

Other prizes were collected by Lorraine Norris, Lyanne Loveday, Jo Rumsey, Sue Myall, Sharon Gilling, Denise Stone, Sally Smith, Beryl Claxton and Joyce Currie.

The afternoon nine-hole team competition saw victory from the first tee go to Pat Last, Joyce Currie, Lorraine Norris and Angela Davenport with back nine success tasted by lady captain Rosemarie Gemmell, Jo Rumsey, Wendy Purser and Michelle Elliott-Britto.
