LEE Chapel Primary School, who recently picked up the Echo Sports Personality Team of the Year prize for 2009 for their boys’ soccer success, have been at their trophy-winning best again.

The Basildon school’s year five boys’ football team and year five girls’ netball line-up led the way by winning the annual Basildon Police Rally Shield in emphatic style, competing against 20 other district schools. The boys remained undefeated throughout the tournament, beating Billericay’s Sunnymede Junior School 2-0 in the final with the goals coming from Matthew Gammon and Ryan O’Connell. The team were presented with their prizes by the Chief Inspector Rachel Wood of Basildon Police. The netball team, coached by Jo Kilroy, remained undefeated too on their way to claiming the Police Shield.

But the greatest achievement was by the Lee Chapel girls’ football team who won the inaugural year six Basildon Sports Partnership League. The format consisted of five round robin events over the course of the school year, played at James Hornsby High School in Leinster Road, Laindon. The girls from Lee Chapel, which is in The Knares, played 25 games, winning more than 20. This was a phenomenal achievement considering it was the first year that the girls had played together and the fact there were four year five children in the team competing against much older opposition. The team consisted of Charlie Anderson, Kelsi Fairbairn, captain Chantelle Harris, Mia Lepore, Hannah Pavelin, Maddie Gordon and Chloe Havis-Hudson.

“Myself, the parents, the teachers and governors are extremely proud of the efforts of all these children,” said Lee Chapel teacher Ian Hampshire.

“It is their reward for all the hard work and dedication they have shown throughout the year, training in all conditions. “They work well for each other and strive to do the best they can for the school.”
