A ONE under par gross back nine saw the aptly named Jack Joy claim victory in Rochford Hundred’s top September Saturday medal.

Joy’s handicap came down one to four after his 71-5=66 — a total of five birdies plus nine pars — won division one from Simon Cassidey (75-6=69) who edged out Ben Franklin (70-1=69) for second place on countback.

Cassidey also saw his handicap drop one after firing two birdies and 10 pars while Franklin had an eagle, four birdies and nine pars.

All the three leading players in division two had a one-shot handicap trim, with victory going to John Hodges, who scored two birdies and 10 pars on his way to 78-12=66.

Runner-up Andrew Cox (81-14=67) parred nine holes, while third placed Stuart Baker birdied the first two holes and went on to par five more, but a triple and two double bogeys kept him from top spot.

Alan Ely had a birdie and five pars in his 90-23=67 which was easily good enough for success in division three ahead of Alan McEwen (93-20=73) and Daniel Kean (93-20=73).

Ray Weidner just saw off the challenge from Phil Parke to win Rochford’s weekly midweek Stableford competition to qualify for the Scott Spencer trophy.

They both notched 38 points but Weidner just got home thanks to a better back nine. Four handicapper Weidner had a trio of birdies and 10 pars while Parke parred 10 holes but a blob on the 18th cost him victory.

Rochford Ladies had 53 players competing in their autumn meeting with victory on a superb 41 Stableford points going to Sally Smith — three more than Penny Kidgell with Maria Williams (37) taking third place.

An afternoon nine-hole Texas Scramble saw victory from the first tee going to Maria Williams, Denise Stone, Tricia Collins and Maureen Wood with back nine success claimed by Di Sammons, Mary Horn, Heather Hazel and Amanda Colgate-Herbert.
