ADRIEN Sturt could make his Essex Pirates debut in Saturday’s BBL Trophy clash against Leicester Riders at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Club.
The 24-year-old has agreed to team up with Tim Lewis’ team for the forthcoming BBL campaign. And he may well be part of the squad for Saturday’s showdown.
“If everything gets sorted and goes to plan than Adrien will be playing against Leicester which will give everyone a big boost,” said Pirates’ head coach Tim Lewis.
“His agents have high hopes for him and believe he has the talent to do well in the European game.
“They want him to play in the BBL first though and we’re only too happy to give him that chance because he’s 6ft 10in tall, is very mobile and can also shoot the ball so I’m sure he can do well.”
Sturt had been playing for the Melbourne Tigers in the Australian National Basketball League.
He joined the Tigers as a junior and will play alongside another new signing – Andre Ellis – in the Pirates squad. Ellis impressed during the pre-season friendly with Mersey Tigers and, after he followed that up by bagging 15 points in Saturday’s 80-70 defeat against Leicester Riders, the 21-year-old has now made a permanent move to Pirates.
“This is a great chance for Andre and I think he could really surprise a few people this season,” said Lewis.
Ellis will definitely figure tonight but Colin Sing is rated doubtful after twisting his ankle .
The game tips off at 7.30pm and prices have been set at £8 adults and £5 concessions.
