SOUTHEND Rugby Club will be looking to make amends for their worst performance of the season when they head to Clifton tomorrow.

The Seasiders lost to the Bristol based club 33-26 back at Warners Bridge in October.

And their head coach Andy Holloway is keen to avoid a double defeat.

“Last time we played Clifton we were 21-0 up quite early on before going on to lose and I think that’s our worst hour of rugby we’ve played all year,” said Holloway.

“We panicked and were very naive.

“I would like to think we’ve learnt from the mistakes we made that afternoon and have improved as a team but it will be another very hard game because Clifton are always difficult to play against.”

Clifton are 11th in the National Two standings and have triumphed in their last four outings.

Holloway is therefore expecting another tough test and is fully aware of their strengths.

“They have Matt Salter, who plays in the back row or at number eight, and he’s a real key man for them,” said Holloway.

“He was with Bristol for many years and is involved in most things they do.

“We have to be aware of that and all the games they have are tight so I’m sure this will be the same.

“I’ve watched videos of their matches and they are a strong team so we have to play well.”

Southend, who are fourth in the table, also go in to the game on the back of four straight wins.

And Holloway has been boosted by those displays.

“We’re confident and we’ve been pleased by the work we’ve been doing without the ball in the victories we’ve had,” said the coach.

“At the same time though we’re obviously wary of the threat Clifton will pose and we certainly don’t want them to do the double over us.”

Holloway looks set to named an unchanged starting line-up by there is a doubt among the replacements where centre Sonny Gay will face a late check on a wrist injury.
