GRAHAM Coughlan will again be playing a big part for Southend United both on and off the pitch at Morecambe tomorrow.

The experienced centre back is again expected to line up in the Blues back four.

And the team will also go in to the game well prepared, thanks to the Irishman’s briefing on the opposition.

“We have a look at a few things and even if just one of the lads gets one per cent extra from it then it’s been worth it,” said Coughlan.

“We look at DVDs of our games and look at individual and collective things and then we also look at the opposition.

“We have to assume they’re doing the same as well but there’s always plenty of banter flying around when we do it and we really are building an excellent team spirit now.”

Coughlan has played a part in that happening and he is loving being involved as a player as well as a coach.

The 36-year-old has made 23 appearances already this season and has been surprised by his level of involvement.

“When I joined the manager told me I would just be a stop gap when there were injuries and suspensions and would be helping on the coaching side more,” recalled Coughlan.

“That was fine by me but I’ve played more than 20 games now and I’m loving it.

“When you get towards the end of your career, like I am, you appreciate it all much more.

“You treat every game like it might be your last and I’m enjoying being out there.

“It’s the best profession in the well.”
