JEAN-PAUL Kalala has completed a free transfer switch to Southend United.
The tough tackling 29-year-old impressed when playing as a trialist against both Braintree Town and Ipswich.
And manager Paul Sturrock is delighted to have added Kalala's battling qualities to his team.
"JP is a very strong man and is the type of person you want in the spine of your side," said Sturrock.
"He played well against Ipswich despite having just two hours sleep due to illness.
"But I'm pleased to have completed the transfer and brought him in."
Kalala, who has signed a year long deal with the club, has previously played for Grimsby, Yeovil Town, Oldham Athletic and Bristol Rovers.
His arrival makes it a hat-trick of signings for Blues today after Ryan Leonard and Liam Dickinson also completed transfers.
