Canvey Island’s two under-14 sides met in the first annual George Hogbin Cup, created in memory of their former club secretary who died last month.

The club’s yellow team, who compete in Division B of the Southend & District Junior Sunday League, were the eventual winners, beating Division D’s blue team 5-1 at the Sid Cope Recreation Ground.

Drewe Key netted first for yellows and was joined on the score sheet by team-mates Ben Vadura and Bryce Cook, while Callum Rowley bagged a brace.

Blues’ Harry Duffal scored arguably the goal of the game and goalkeeper Billy Saville saved a penalty, but neither could prevent the Yellows from taking the inaugural trophy, which was presented to the players by members of George’s family.

More than 100 people turned up for the event, which also included a barbecue, raffle and mini-games, raising £300 for the youth team.

And George’s grandson Mark Mackey, who coaches the Blues, believed there could not have been a more fitting tribute to his grandfather.

“He did so much for Canvey and everybody really appreciates what he did,” said Mackey.

“Everyone on the island has something good to say about him.

“He believed sport was something to be enjoyed by all, so to see so many people come and enjoy such a terrific day really would have pleased him.

“Next year we’re aiming to make the event bigger and better with a few more teams.”

In addition to being the Gulls’ club secretary, George spent 33 years on Castle Point Sports Council and co-founded Castle Point Sports Club for the Disabled.

He captained the Essex Disabled Sports team for more than a decade and served as a games official for the Special Olympics on several occasions.
