LEE Sawyer hopes a goalscoring return to action can get him back in to the Southend United squad for Saturday’s game at Burton Albion.

Sawyer scored for Blues in their 3-1 win at Braintree Town in a friendly on Tuesday night.

And he now wants that to lead for a first team recall.

“It’s been a frustrating time for me lately so hopefully I can be back in to the squad for the Burton game now,” said Sawyer, 22.

“I haven’t had a game for a while so it was nice to be able to get a run out against Braintree and I just hope I did enough to get back in to the squad.”

Sawyer’s last appearance came as a second half substitute during the 1-0 home defeat to Bradford City in mid-December.

After that, the former Chelsea trainee suffered a thigh injury which forced him to endure a spell on the sidelines.

But he has now been back in training for around three weeks.

“It’s coming up to a month that I’ve been in full training and it’s been hard not being involved in matches,” said Sawyer.

“I want to be playing games and helping the team because that’s what you train all week for.

“You just have to hope that a chance does come your way and that when it does you have to be ready to take it.”

Sawyer played the full 90 minutes against Braintree and opened the scoring from close range when he reacted quickly to a deflected shot from David Martin.

He figured out wide on the right hand side and insisted he would be happy to stay there if that increased his chances of earning a recall from manager Paul Sturrock.

“I’ve not played on the wing much in my career before but I’ll play there if I’m asked to,” said Sawyer.

“I just want to get on to the pitch and show what I can do again.”
