GREAT Wakering’s recent resurgence hit the buffers on Tuesday night as they lost 2-0 at home to promotion-hopefuls Brentwood Town at Burroughs Park, writes Brian Jeeves.
It was always going to be a tall order against the visitors, who named ex-Football League players Darren Blewitt and Kevin McLeod in their line-up.
Former Rovers player Steve Butterworth and ex-Canvey man Ryan Edgar both shot wide with early chances, while Nick Skelton went close for the home side with a header.
Butterworth then forced home keeper Louis Godwin-Green into a smart save with his feet when he looked certain to score.
But the visitors made the breakthrough five minutes before the interval when Adam Holmes was booked for a heavy tackle on Danny Dafter, and from Lee Blackburn’s resulting free-kick home skipper Lewis Sparrow turned the ball into his own net.
And they added a second 13 minutes from time when Butterworth finally beat Godwin-Green from close range following a fine build up down the left flank.
