BOXER Jake Fitt-Spooner has set his sights on a call-up to the England team after winning the National Schoolboys Championship.

The 14-year-old Basildon pugilist claimed the Class Three under-40kg crown in Nottinghamshire.

And now he hopes his performance against Ammar Khan will earn him an England selection for the Three Nations tournament later this year.

“Jake’s having a week’s break and will then go back into training,” said mum Carla Spooner.

“Ammar Khan boxed for the England select squad last year so we are hoping Jake might be called up, but we will have to wait and see.”

The Three Nations are in July, so the Woodlands School pupil will have plenty of time to train at West Ham ABC.

And it was his seven-days-a-week training schedule that paid dividends for the former Billericay ABC fighter in the finals at Mansfield on Sunday.

Southpaw Khan had a height and reach advantage over London champion Jake and Carla admitted she thought her son would lose out to his rival from Birmingham’s Hall Green ABC.

Jake was forced to change his strategy but still won 14-9 on points in the three-round showdown.

“I’m really proud of him as it was the toughest fight yet for Jake,” added Carla. “He fought his heart out. He went in with a game plan and was going to box Ammar, but he was tall and his arms were so long that it was hard to get inside him.

“But Jake fought his way through it and won the title, even though it was a total battle.

“We’d like to thank all his trainers and everyone who supported Jake.”

The triumph made it 11 fights unbeaten for Jake and was the second time he had beaten a southpaw.
