SOUTHEND United have appointed a new chief executive officer.

Gary Lockett, a non-executive director with the club since 2008, has taken over the role left by Tara Brady in early February.

Local businessman Lockett said it was a “huge honour” to represent the club he’s supported since he was a boy.

“We are on the cusp of probably the most exciting period in the club’s history, and to be part of that is hugely inspiring,” he said.

Lockett said he looked forward to working with chairman Ron Martin on the ongoing project to move the club to a new stadium at Fossetts Farm.

Brady, who joined Blues in December 2010, left last month after clashing with Martin over how the club should be run.

The club released a statement which said Brady had become preoccupied with matters on the field and had missed commercial and marketing objectives.
