CANVEY Island’s relegation was confirmed after a 31-10 defeat at Saffron Walden.
The reverse made it 14 games without a win for the Islanders.
And they will now be playing in London Three North East next season, much to the disappointment of club spokesman Richard Smith.
“We’re very frustrated but this game just about summed up our season,” said Smith.
“We played some good rugby but could not make the last pass count.
“When the luck is against you the bounce of the ball and the run of the play does not go your way.”
It is a completely different story for Basildon, as they recorded an 11 straight successive win, beating Hampstead 46-27.
The two teams conjured an entertaining match with 13 tries being scored.
Eight of those went to Basildon and they went ahead in the seventh minute when winger Brad Johnson sped over to score a try he also converted.
However, the next 10 minutes was all Hampstead as they showed great enterprise, running the ball from anywhere on the pitch and scoring two tries to lead 12-7.
Basildon got into their stride they scored a couple of forward based tries and were 29-12 ahead at half-time.
Basildon stretched their lead in the second half with prop Jim Harman finishing exquisitely.
