SUCH has been the manner of Southend United’s season that it somehow seems quite apt that the drama will continue until the very last league game.

This has been one of the most eventful campaigns in the club’s history with training ground bust-ups, heated exchanges after games, players getting into trouble with the law, being sacked for gross misconduct and being disciplined for an incident in the team hotel.

And things on the pitch have been far from straight forward either.

However, despite some dips in form, Blues have been vying for promotion for the vast majority of the season and their recent resurgence has made a top-three finish possible once again.

Southend have now lost just one of their last six games and have taken 13 points from the last 18 on offer to stay in the hunt for automatic promotion.

With just one game to go, at home to bottom of the table and already relegated Macclesfield Town next weekend, Paul Sturrock’s fifth-placed side have closed the gap on third-placed Crawley Town to just a single point.

Torquay United, who sit fourth in the standings, are also a point clear of Blues and it has all the makings of an incredibly exciting final day decider this weekend.

Crawley travel to 13th-placed Accrington Stanley at the weekend while Torquay head to second-from-bottom Hereford, who surprisingly won 3-0 at Crawley on Saturday.

But if Blues can better the results of both of their rivals then it will be them celebrating automatic promotion. Southend therefore remain outsiders for the top three and it is only natural to reflect on how silly points dropped throughout the season could have strengthened their chances of success.

But Crawley and Torquay must undoubtedly also have matches where they also saw victories slip away.

On the other side of the coin, Blues have also had games where they have been fortunate to win and that has resulted in a mouth-watering final day of action.

Varying twists and turns are certain to unfold and, just like the whole of this season for Southend United, it is unlikely to never be dull.
