PETER Gilbert wants his best run of form in a Southend United shirt to continue into the play-offs.

The left-back has impressed in his last five outings since coming back in to the starting line-up.

And he feels working on his fitness has been the main reason for his better displays in the back four.

“When I was out of the team a few weeks ago I was able to sort out a few issues which I should have done before in terms of fitness and slight knocks I had,” said Gilbert, 28.

“That meant when I did get back into the team that I was actually feeling the best I’ve ever felt since coming to Southend.

“I’d like to think that has been reflected in my performances and I’ve been pleased with how I’ve been playing.

“That’s lifted my confidence, which is also important, but it all counts for nothing if I don’t play well in the play-offs.”

Gilbert is also relishing being back in the side having previously endured a frustrating spell out of favour.

The defender started just once in nine games and saw Luke Prosser and the on-loan Lee Hills jump ahead of him in the pecking order.

But Gilbert is now back to being first choice and Blues have not conceded a goal since he was recalled, something else he also wants to see continue.

“It would be great to carry that on and I’m really looking forward to these games because I’ve never been involved in the play-offs before,” said Gilbert.

“Crewe will be very hard opponents but we’ve been playing well and can hopefully get through to Wembley.”
