Sue Simpson says the moment she’ll never forget was being in the Olympic Stadium in Atlanta in 1996 to see defending 100m champion Linford Christie disqualified in the final.
The British sprinting legend made two false starts, leaving Canada’s Donovan Bailey to take his crown in a new world record of 9.84 seconds.
Christie, who famously won Olympic gold at the Barcelona Games in 1992, retired a year later.
Simpson said: “It is not a particularly fond memory, but it is certainly something I’ll never forget because I was there in the stadium watching it.
“It was great to be at those Games, but I just remember how much of a shock it was when Linford got disqualified.”
