JAMES Tomkins says he’d love to cap his memorable season with a spot at the London Olympic Games.

The 23-year-old centre back remains in the squad after it was cut from 191 to 80 last month by manager Stuart Pearce, and he has a good chance of making the Games after a string of impressive displays for Wembley-bound West Ham this season.

“I know I am in the provisional squad but I’m not sure if I’ll be in the final squad when it’s named,” said the former Chalvedon School pupil, who has just been named in the PFA Championship team of the year.

“It is something I’ll be looking out for after the play-offs, which is all I am concentrating on at the moment.

“But if I got the shout it would be brilliant, and with the Olympics taking place in our country it would be unbelievable to be there.”

There has been mounting speculation over who will make Pearce’s final 18-man squad. It will include three over-age players, and the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Craig Bellamy and David Beckham are all thought likely to be included.

But the front-runners for central defence are not clear, with the recent injury to Manchester United’s Chris Smalling possibly opening up another place in the squad.

A lot could depend on which of the young English players new national team manager Roy Hodgson takes to next month’s European Championships. But Tomkins’ age, versatility and form all make him a good bet to make the final cut.

And, after receiving regular call-ups for England’s under-21s from Pearce, he is a player the manager knows and trusts.

But he says for now it is just a case of keeping his fingers crossed.

“At the moment it is just a case of having to wait and see what they want to do with the team,” he said.

“With my performances this year I hope I can get the call-up, but if not I’ll just enjoy my summer.”

Interest in the Team GB football team is going to be enormous with more than 50,000 tickets already sold for their opening group game against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26.

They will also face United Arab Emirates at Wembley on July 29, and Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on August 1.

Spain and Brazil are likely to be the teams to beat at the tournament.
