ROBIN Womack used the disappointment of Southend United’s play-off elimination to fire him up for a successful showing at Stoke Mandeville.

The wheelchair bound shot-putter, who is a keen Blues fan, produced a season’s best throw of 10.49m.

And the Southend based 40-year-old felt his anger from the football had helped get him back to his best.

“I was really angry and upset about Blues getting knocked out by Crewe in the play-offs and I used that to fire me up,” said Womack.

“I couldn’t get to the game because of my training but I was close to throwing things at TV while I was watching if I’m honest.

“I took that anger out in my competition and, after a slow start, it really worked.

“I was slapping myself around the face to get the adrenaline going and people were probably wondering what I was doing but it was great to get 10.49m.”

The impressive performance was another step in the right direction for Womack’s bid to qualify for the Paralympics in London this summer.

But he feels capable of landing an even bigger throw.

“There’s still much more to come from me,” said Womack, who will be back in action at Chelmsford this weekend.

“Each time I’m competing I’m getting better and I want that trend to continue.”

Womack also impressed in the discus at Stoke Mandeville, throwing 26.54 metres.

That was just 20 centimetres below his lifetime best which was set two years.

And Womack also feels capable of doing well in his second discipline.

“I don’t concentrate as much on the discus but that’s been going well too,” said Womack.

“If I hit one right soon then it could really start to fly.”
