PLUS one handicapper Arthur Leonard shot a superb three under gross to secure victory in the top division of Rochford Hundred’s June Saturday medal.

Leonard’s scorecard of 68+1=69 contained only one blemish in tough conditions with a bogey on the stroke index one fifth hole.

However his round also included four birdies with the pivotal one on the last hole enabling him to snatch division one honours on countback from Rochford stalwart Tony Hadley (72-3=69) who helped himself to a couple of birdies.

Mark Walden (75-5=70) was just a shot away in third, another to score well in the prevailing conditions.

Division two was also secured on countback.

Former captain Peter Leslie shot a 76-7=69, playing consistently throughout with 11 pars plus a birdie on the opening hole on his way to a new handicap of six. Andrew Gilling (78-9=69) was unfortunate to just lose out to Leslie, his chances harmed with two double bogeys late on in his round.

The third division winner was Andrew Metcalf (85-18=67) who shot the best net round of the day and also earned him qualification for the Fullers London pride gold medal competition.

Metcalf also managed a one shot reduction as did runner up Hugh Evans (82-14=68) who will now play off 13. The midweek Scott Spencer was attended by 90 golfers and no less than eight of them managed a handicap cut with some excellent scoring.

Top of the tree came Paul Kelly with 41 points, no doubt helped with a couple of birdies on his way to a two shot handicap cut to 19.

Runner up Mike Davill was another to see a two shot handicap cut, now 13, in a round containing 10 pars in his 40 points.

Arthur Leonard carried on his fine recent form in also scoring 40 points.

Leonard’s round deserves a special mention as he struck a magnificent eight birdies, with five in a row through holes six to 10.

The ladies section played for the Nicholas Trophy, a stableford format competition.

Seven handicapper Maria Williams struck gold with 39 points and a new handicap of six.

Two points away in second was Lorraine Norris, pipping Pat Last into third on countback.

Finally, the Ladies Bronze team continued their winning ways with an away win at Forrester Park last Friday.

Sue Alexander, Pat Last, Elaine Tucker, Beryl Claxton, Pat Lowndes, Wendy Wilcock, Lorraine Norris were the players to earn a fine 4 & 3 away win.
