RACE organisers are hoping for a record-breaking Southend Half Marathon on Sunday.

Close to 2,000 runners have already been registered for the event which is taking place to raise money for Havens Hospices.

And if more than 1,625 of those finish the 13.1mile course, then it will be a new best.

“The record was set last year so we have a tough act to follow, “ said Havens event organiser Judy Grocott.

“We have close to 2,000 registered already but you always get a few drop out before the day.

“But last year we raised £60,000 and it would be great to get something similar this time around.

“Our hospices can only exist because of the support and generosity of the local community.

“Crowds of supporters really give runners the boost they need so we’re looking forward to greeting spectators turning out along the seafront to offer a clap and cheer of support along the way.”

Starting at 10am from Shoebury East Beach, the route is mostly flat and takes in parts of the Southend coastline before reaching the finishing line back at East Beach where runners will receive a goody bag sponsored by Waitrose.

The supermarket has donated 2,000 bananas and an equal number of carrier bags, to form the basis of the bags.

Advanced entry for the race is now closed but people can enter on the day for an additional £5, (£22 for non-club affiliated participants to enter and £20 for those runners affiliated to a club).

Alongside the Half Marathon there is a 3K fun run starting at 10.15am taking fun runners along the coastal path by the Watch Tower, around the lake and back to East Beach.

Sponsored by BTMK Soli-citors, there are medals and T-shirts for each finisher and entry is £5.
