JONTY Clarke’s dad has his tickets sorted for this summer’s Olympics.

And he is now hoping that means he will be watching his son in action.

Dick Clarke, who himself is a former international hockey player, is secretary of the Great Britain Hockey Board.

The position entitles Dick to tickets for all hockey matches at the London Games. But having Jonty out on the pitch would make that extra special.

“It’s harder to watch than it is to play but of course it would be amazing if Jonty was to be in the squad again this summer,” said Dick, who lives in Leigh on Sea.

“We’re all very proud of what he’s achieved in his career and that will stay the same whether or not he gets selected for the Olympics.

“Nobody really wants to say anything about their chances of being involved because some very good players are going to have to be left out.

“However, we obviously hope Jonty will make it.”

Jonty, who attended Southend High School during his youth and previously played for Old Southendian, was part of Britain’s 18-man squad for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup which finished in Malaysia at the weekend.

Britain came fourth in the tournament after losing 3-1 to India in the third place play-off.

And Dick, who travelled out to watch the games, revealed the team had been disappointed by their displays.

“I think the side felt they were capable of playing better,” said Dick.

“The conditions were very difficult because of the heat and that did make it hard, but there were some good signs.”

Jonty featured in the majority of the matches in Malaysia and scored in the 1-1 draw against Korea.

However, the 31-year-old now faces an anxious wait before discovering if he has made the squad for the Olympics.

The decision is set to be made on Wednesday, June 27, and, if selected, it will be Jonty’s second Games after he also played in Beijing back in 2008.
