SOUTHEND United midfielder Michael Timlin will today discover the seriousness of the ankle injury which has forced him to miss his side’s last two matches.

Timlin, who suffered the problem at Morecambe 10 days ago, is set to visit a London based surgeon this morning.

And, despite a worrying first scan, the 27-year-old is still hoping to avoid an extended spell on the sidelines.

“The scan showed up a grade three tear which is the worst you can have and a chipped bone but I suffered both of those injuries when I was with Fulham when I was younger,” said Timlin.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it is the old injuries showing up on the scans and the way the ankle is feeling at the moment I think that may be the case.

“If the injuries were current then I wouldn’t even be able to walk but even though it’s still quite swollen and bruised, it’s really improving.

“I’m therefore hoping for good news today but if that’s not the case then I could be out for a little while.

“Bilel Mohsni had the same injury when he was here and was out for six to eight weeks and I would hate that to happen to me.”

Timlin picked up the injury following a mistimed challenge from Jordan Mustoe inside the first five minutes of the 1-0 defeat at the Globe Arena.

And, despite thinking the defender should have been sent off for the tackle, Timlin holds no grudge against the full-back.

“It was one of the worst tackles I’ve seen in a while and I think it warranted a red card if I’m honest,” said Timlin.

“I think it would have been if it happened later in the game but because it was so early the referee got scared.

“I don’t think the player did it on purpose though and he went in to get the ball not me.

“I’ve probably done the same thing before but it was just unlucky I got caught and just hope I don’t have to miss many matches because it’s so frustrating not being able to play.”
